Motherhood and understanding your menstrual cycle
Your cycle, explained

Understanding
Ovulation

Ovulation is the moment when your ovary releases an egg, giving you a small window each month when pregnancy can occur.

Knowing when you are likely to ovulate can help you understand your menstrual cycle, recognise changes in your body and identify the days when you are most fertile.

Every woman's cycle is different, and your fertile window can vary from month to month. That's why understanding your own cycle is such an important part of getting to know your body.

Your fertile window

The days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation itself are generally considered the most fertile time of the menstrual cycle.

Signs of Ovulation

Your body can give you little clues when ovulation is approaching. Learning to recognise these changes can help you better understand your cycle and your most fertile days.

01

Changes in Cervical Mucus

Around ovulation, cervical mucus may become clearer, wetter and more slippery. It can sometimes resemble raw egg white.

02

Mild Pelvic Pain

Some women experience a mild ache, cramp or twinge on one side of the lower abdomen around the time of ovulation.

03

Breast Tenderness

Hormonal changes throughout your cycle can cause your breasts or nipples to feel more sensitive or tender around ovulation.

04

Increased Sex Drive

Some women notice an increase in sexual desire around ovulation as reproductive hormones change during the fertile window.

05

A Small Rise in Temperature

After ovulation, your basal body temperature can rise slightly because of hormonal changes.

06

You May Feel Different

Some women notice changes in their mood, energy, appetite or overall sense of wellbeing around the middle of their cycle.

Remember: not everyone experiences noticeable signs of ovulation, and symptoms can vary from cycle to cycle. Understanding your own pattern over time can be helpful.

Pregnancy Tips

Trying to conceive can feel exciting, overwhelming and sometimes a little confusing. These simple tips can help you understand your fertile window and support your journey towards pregnancy.

02 Have Sex Often

Your chances of becoming pregnant are generally highest when sex occurs in the days leading up to ovulation. Because sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for several days, having sex regularly throughout your fertile window can help increase your chances.

03 You Don't Need to Lie Down After Sex

You may have heard that you need to stay in bed after sex to give sperm a better chance of reaching the egg. There is no good evidence that lying down for a specific amount of time after sex improves your chances of becoming pregnant.

04 Maintain a Healthy Weight

Being significantly underweight or overweight can affect ovulation and reproductive hormones. Aim for healthy, sustainable habits through balanced nutrition and regular moderate activity rather than extreme dieting or exercise.

05 Make Space for Less Stress

Trying to conceive can become stressful, particularly when every cycle feels like a countdown. Make time for things that help you relax and feel like yourself — whether that is walking, yoga, meditation, reading, spending time together or simply slowing down.

06 Manage Medical Conditions

If you have a medical condition, speak with your doctor before trying to conceive so that it can be managed as well as possible. It is also worth discussing any prescription, over-the-counter medicines or supplements you are taking, as some may need to be reviewed before pregnancy.

07 His Health Matters Too

Fertility is a shared journey. Male reproductive health can also influence the chances of conception. Healthy eating, regular activity, avoiding smoking, moderating alcohol and managing stress can all form part of a healthy lifestyle for both partners.

08 Can You Choose a Boy or Girl?

You may hear theories about timing sex, sexual positions or particular diets influencing whether you conceive a boy or a girl. However, there is no reliable natural method that guarantees the sex of a baby.
